Some of the most common signs of a blocked drain include; inconsistencies in your water levels in your toilet, water draining away a lot slower than usual in your sink or when you flush your toilet, and of course, foul smelling odours being produced.

Who is responsible for an external drain blockage?

In general, the homeowner is responsible for unblocking any drains within your property boundary such as, beneath your house, garden, and driveway. These are classed as private drains. Any drains which do not share pipes with your neighbours are your responsibility to unblock. More information can be found on “Irish Water” & “Citizens Advice”

Why am I experiencing blockages in my drains?

There are various scenarios where a CCTV survey would be extremely beneficial to diagnose and rectify your drainage issues. If you are experiencing re-occurring blockages or you suspect you may have a bigger problem such as a collapsed or broken pipework - a drain survey could be absolutely vital in understanding the issue at hand. Similarly, a CCTV survey is also recommended as a part of pre-purchase investigations when buying a new property. This will give you the power of an informed decision before signing.

Other reasons your drains are blocked can include more severe problems such as structural defects, broken or collapsed pipes. In which case, a survey may be recommended.

Preventitive Measures

Can I prevent further blockages?

Being mindful of what gets flushed into your drains, is by far, the most effective way of preventing further blockages in your drains. Here's some quick and easy tips you can take away in order to help keep your pipes flowing.

  • Ensure you do not flush un-biodegradable items such as nappies, sanitary towels, and wet wipes down the toilet.
  • Endeavour to keep fat or grease to pour down the drain whilst you are washing up in the kitchen. Try to recycle and reuse as much as posible, but when you need to dispose of cooking oil and fat, try pouring used cooking oil into a unrecyclable container & throw away with the reest of your general bin waste.
  • Try to remove fallen hair from around your shower plug hole after showering.
  • If you are experiencing recurring blockages, or you live in an older property which is more succeptable to persistent issues, we would recommend a CCTV Drain Survey. A survey will provide you with the information and analysis you need to discover, assess and fix any blockages that cannot be rectified with a simple unblock.
